The Center for Interreligious Theology and Religious Studies (CITRS) seeks to foster theology and religious studies research, meeting the needs and harnessing the potential of multi-religious societies.

This interdisciplinary center consolidates existing collaborations between the Berlin Institute for Islamic Theology, the Institute for Catholic Theology, and the Faculty of Theology at Humboldt University, alongside the School of Jewish Theology at the University of Potsdam. Its primary focus is to promote and initiate new cooperative research projects in these areas. Additionally, CITRS supportscollaboration with researchers from other religious traditions and related disciplines.

Networking

CITRS aims to integrate the unique scientific approaches of the four represented theological traditions: Islamic, Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant. It is driven by the goal of an intertheological approach, which pays special attention to the interactions between religious traditions and their transformations over time. Against this backdrop, the center dedicates itself to studying the changes in religious symbols, meanings, and knowledge cultures, both historically and in contemporary times.

Third Mission

In addition to championing outstanding research that bridges academic disciplines and religious traditions, CITRS is dedicated to fostering meaningful dialogue with the general public. The aim is to establish Berlin-Brandenburg as a central hub for intercultural and interreligious discourse, thereby generating momentum for discussions on religion that influence both the social and the political spheres.
